CRO (Ray Noland BFA 1995)  Just finished this piece for an upcoming show in Chicago at the South Side Community Art Center. He read an article awhile back and the quote below inspired the image.

"…after graduating from business school last year and not having much success garnering interviews, he [Johnny Williams] decided to retool his résumé, scrubbing it of any details that might tip off his skin color. His membership, for instance, in the African-American business students association? Deleted.”

Show details below.

The School of the Art Institute of Chicago’s African American Alumni Association, Multicultural Affairs and the South Side Community Art Center present an exhibition entitled Recession.

Recession will chronicle the existence of the only remaining Works Progress Administration – WPA art center in the country. Birthed out of the Great Depression, the SSCAC has had an enduring impact on the artistic and cultural fabric of Chicago. For many years it has served as one of the few artistic spaces accessible to African American patrons and artists from all genres. Even in the face of current economic and societal challenges it remains an entrenched pillar within the community.

To honor this legacy they will exhibit work from SAIC alumni, each connected to the center and the community in their own indelible way. Starting with the founders, artists like, Dr. Margaret Burroughs, Elizabeth Catlett, Charles White and Archibald Motley, moving to the civil rights generation, and concluding with recent graduates and current students from SAIC. Recession will draw upon the parallels between the Center’s existence during the depression of the thirties to our current economic and social challenges.

Opening Reception: Friday, April 2, 2010

South Side Community Art Center
3831 South Michigan Avenue
Chicago
