The School of the Art Institute of Chicago Community is deeply saddened by the widespread loss of life and devastation caused by the massive earthquake that struck Haiti.
We are especially overwhelmed by the loss of SAIC alumnus Flores 'Flo' McGarrell (MFA Class of 2004) who was killed in a building collapse in Jacmel. Our thoughts are with Flo's friends and family in this extremely difficult time. Our colleague and SAIC alumna Sue Framewho was with Flo when the earthquake hit, is reported to be safe but remains in Haiti. We wish her a safe and speedy return home. The U.S. State Department Operations Center said Americans seeking information about family members in Haiti should call 1-888-407-4747. Due to heavy volume, some callers may receive a recording. "Our embassy is still in the early stages of contacting American citizens through our Warden Network," the U.S. State Department said in a statement. "Communications are very difficult within Haiti at this time."
