Constantin Brancusi's L'Oiseau dans l'espace, or Bird in
Space, from 1923 to 1926 is one of the most influential sculptures of
the 20th century; some critics even consider it to be a revolutionary new
beginning in sculpture and the origin of modernity. Iñigo
Manglano-Ovalle (MFA 1989) has tested what would happen if this icon of modernity left
its theoretical orbit and performed a hypothetical re-entry into the
Earth's atmosphere at a speed ten times that of sound in a hypervelocity
wind tunnel at the U.S. Air Force Arnold Engineering Development Center in
Silver Spring, Maryland. Suspended in flight, Bird in Space at MACH
10 confronts the values of modernity with those of our own time.
